New to Emmanuel?

Welcome! If you’re new to Durham, an incoming student, or just want to find out more about our Students and 20s community, you’re in the right place. We are committed to learning and growing in God together, and here you’ll find out more about how we do that.

The easiest way to find out more is to meet up with us for a coffee (or alternative beverage). But if you’re keen to hear what we’re about first, read on.

Emmanuel seeks to be a growing, charismatic, family church with a world vision, and we hope for our Students and 20s group to be a reflection of that. Our vision is to deepen our relationship with God through His word, release gifts, raise leaders through discipleship and reach the lost and the nations.

  • We believe that, through the Holy Spirit, the church is equipped with spiritual gifts (from prophecy to hospitality to encouragement to teaching and many more) and we hope to both grow in and release those gifts as we meet together. As we seek to grow in understanding and love of God, we long to press into the Holy Spirit and what He has for us individually and as a community.

  • We’re passionate about seeing people grow in leadership, raised up to walk in the calling to which they’ve been called. Whether this be in a sports team, society, a college JCR, or within a church context, we want to equip Students and 20s in their spheres of influence to carry Jesus wherever they are.

  • We’re a community passionate about evangelism, and seek to resource, empower and encourage our Students and 20s to share Jesus with those around them. We are launching our Emmanuel Global Reach programme which is super exciting - click on the link to find out more! God is building His Kingdom, and we’re psyched that we get to be a part of what he’s doing in Durham and in the nations!

  • As a family church, we long for anyone that comes through our doors to feel welcomed and loved, and see how they fit into the wider family of God. We are passionate about mentorship and discipleship and believe that every student will grow most with a faithful disciple beside them. Our community is knitted into the fabric of the wider Emmanuel Church, and we’re committed to building relationships both among our peers and with those of all different ages and backgrounds in our wider church family.

In a normal week, you can see those things outworked in a few different ways. Firstly, we meet with our wider church family on a Sunday morning at 10:30am in the Durham Centre (and get there with our free bus). We meet on Sunday Evening for The Hub, a student-led gathering. During the week, we meet in larger groups called Emmanuel Communities, smaller discipleship groups called Fight Clubs, and for Prayer on a morning of the week.

Our Students and 20s Community is overseen by Jonny Higgins. He and the student leadership team would love to chat if you have any questions or want to find out more, so drop them a message at students@emmanuel.org.uk.
