Make Lunch #2

We love to show Jesus’ love to communities around us. One way we do this is through Make Lunch, our holiday activity club at Gilesgate Primary School.

After a hugely successful start in the summer, Make Lunch returned during October half-term - and was again a fantastic time, with lots of families, old and new, joining us for activities and lunch together on Tuesday and Friday.

Many of the families from the summer said how much the children were looking forward to coming again and on Friday we had the highest attendance of any session yet.

This meant even more people got to experience the delights that were created by our ‘guest chefs’ that day - two of the mums who have attended regularly since the summer offered to come and cook an authentic curry and they did an absolutely fantastic job, ably assisted by some of our regular Make Lunch kitchen team.

So a massive thank you to all the volunteers who again made it possible - you are amazing. We won’t be running at Christmas as the school is closed for the whole holiday and so we are looking at alternative ways we can bless the families over that period. We are then looking forward to running again in February half term.

Make Lunch - filling the Holiday Hunger gap

God is calling us as a church to love and serve the poor and needy around us.

One opportunity we have to do this is through Make Lunch.

A core team led by Jenny Booth has connected with the charity Transforming Lives for Good to bring to Durham the Make Lunch initiative: providing an activity club and nutritious lunch in the school holidays for children - and families - who might otherwise go hungry.

We’ll be running Make Lunch at Gilesgate Primary School, Durham, initially on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four of the six weeks of school summer holiday. Exact dates will be confirmed shortly.

We’re looking for volunteers to: prepare food, help with children’s activities, and meet and chat with parents. Various time slots will be available, around the club’s core lunchtime hours.

If you would like to help, please contact Jenny Booth.

Let's Do Lunch returns

Our first Let’s Do Lunch meal took place a few weeks back, when around 40 of us gathered at The Durham Centre after church for a two-course lunch, prepared by some wonderful volunteers.

The idea was twofold:
1) To help people meet new friends in the church
2) To help old friends catch up over food

Let’s Do Lunch was such a blessing! I’m a busy mum of five and to be cooked for was amazing, the food was really good and nice to be able to spend time with church family
We signed up for the Let’s do Lunch not knowing what to expect. What a lovely surprise to find the room prepared and tables attractively set with flowers too! We were waited on by friendly and efficient helpers and enjoyed a delicious two-course meal in a real family atmosphere. You could sit with friends or mix up with those not so well known to you. All in all a great idea soon to be repeated we hope and such a blessing to be catered for

Following this initial success, Let’s Do Lunch will return on Sunday 16th June.

The meal is offered on a ‘pay what you feel’ basis.

Sign up is required in advance. Please contact Jenny Booth. Please state any dietary requirements.
