A slightly belated November update from Scarlett on how her FP internship is going…
My update for November features a few scriptures that guided me through the month.
Luke 5:36-39
Confusing parables, but once understood emphasise that Jesus' teachings are transformative and can not be picked and chosen or merely adapted to fit the lawful Jewish religion of the time. This encouraged and motivated me at the start of the month to seek being in tune with the Holy Spirit. I realised there is nothing more important than knowing God (i.e. not just knowing of Him).
Proverbs 16:9 : "The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps."
This is a verse given to me in Madagascar. I have been meditating on it since and in Bedford God indicated that this year as an intern at Emmanuel will act as a springboard to send me forward! I can already recognise the passions he is growing within me that could create future opportunities. He also encouraged me that I will carry my home on my back, which could mean all manner of things, but what I do know is that I am always at home when with Him.
Matthew 25:34-40
These verses are familiar to me because of a hymn I sung at primary school: 'when I needed a neighbour'. Since becoming a Christian they have always struck me, and increasingly so. It is a revelation to hear that serving people who are outcast, those who society tells are nothing, is serving Jesus. Wow. I am continually challenged to hold back judgments and give of myself sacrificially without selfish ambition. REfUSE increasingly helps me put this into practice.
Matthew 18:21-35
This is a parable I chose to help explain forgiveness to Ignite Juniors one Sunday morning. It was key to reminding me of just how much Jesus forgives in this world. And more personally, forgives me for. If He is so gracious, not asking for repayment or for us to earn our worth, then why should I ever fail to forgive? Forgiveness brings peace; not one of us lives life without making mistakes, so let's accept each others' and help one another to make less.
Genesis 12:1-3
This verse was highlighted in Ali's sermon on Extravagant Mission. It demonstrates that right from the beginning, we were caught up in the big purposes of God! What we do in the present is preparation for His Kingdom. Who we bless now will be blessed in Heaven. But firstly, God tells us that we are blessed; and this is how we can love others, through knowing Him who blesses us. I find that this is an ongoing battle for me; to first receive God's overflowing love, before trying to give it out.
